Exploring the X-ray nature of the young radio source J1511+0518 with Chandra
Abstract
We present an X-ray study of J1511+0518, a nearby (z=0.084) young radio source belonging to the class of Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs). Its radio structure is extremely compact, with hotspot separation of ~7 pc, and hotspot expansion velocity which implies a kinematic age of ~300 years. X-ray observations with XMM-Newton and NuSTAR revealed that J1511+0518 is absorbed with X-ray column density in excess of 1023 cm-2. Only a handful of CSOs with such properties are known to date, offering a unique insight into the onset of a young radio source and host galaxy feedback process. We performed a 60 ks Chandra observation of J1511+0518 with the goal of resolving and characterizing the X-ray emission of the source on a kiloparsec scale. In addition, we constructed a broadband radio-to-hard X-ray band SED of the source, and discussed various theoretical models for its high energy emission, including the expanding radio lobe model which has been successful in explaining the broadband radio-to-gamma-ray SED of the archetypal CSO, PKS 1718-649.
